Testing Procedure / Technique Review Videos

Technique Review Videos

When submitting videos for technique reviews, please adhere to the following guidelines.

  • Make sure the area you are filming in is well lit.
  • Make sure your whole body is visible during the complete movement. This means that in all frames your head and feet should always be visible.
  • Make sure the video is clear enough to distinguish who is performing the movements.
  • For techniques please perform the technique from a minimum of 2 angles – from the front and from the side. The use of multiple cameras is encouraged so you don’t have to perform too many times.
    • For best results film from 5 angles. Front, back, left, right, and above.
  • For self-defense techniques please perform the technique without a partner, then with a partner from the multiple angles.
  • For forms, please perform the form from both the front and back.
    • For best results, film from 5 angles, front, back, left, right, and above.
  • Please perform the move in slow motion at least once, and at full speed at least once.

Testing Videos

When submitting your full test videos, please adhere to the following guidelines. Black belts see here for additional restrictions and information.

  • Make sure the area you are filming in is well lit.
  • Make sure your whole body is visible during the complete movement. This means that in all frames your head and feet should always be visible.
  • Make sure the video is clear enough to distinguish who is performing the movements and the date and time on the news program or newspaper is clearly visible.
  • At the beginning of the video please state your name, your current rank, and what rank you are currently testing for.
  • You should show a current newspaper or have a news program playing in the background to validate the date of the test.
  • You should have a news channel television program (or another video) playing in the background of your test (muted), or have a clock with a seconds display clearly visible to ensure that the timing of the test is unaltered.
  • The test must be done in a single recording session, but breaks are allowed between Sections, Parts, and camera angles. Exceptions can be made for extenuating circumstances. Please contact your instructor if you need to do this in more than one session for prior approval.
  • If any accommodations need to be made (disability, injury, illness, etc…) , please discuss with your instructor ahead of time so the test can be properly graded with these taken into account.
  • You could opt to record with 2 or more cameras simultaneously so that you don’t need to perform the material multiple times.
  • Section 0 – Performance of the Master 8 Fold Form
    • You will video yourself performing the Master 8 Fold form from 2 camera angles (front and back)
    • Moves should be clean, crisp, and deliberate. Technique is the focus here, not speed.

        • Perform all the techniques in succession up through all the ranks first, then switch camera angles.
        • This should be done at full speed. This is not a race – pace yourself appropriately. This is not a slow motion practice either.
        • There should be little to no pauses or breaks between the movements except to re-center yourself for the next technique.
    • Part 1.2 Previous Rank Self Defense
      • You will then video yourself performing all previous self-defense techniques with a partner from at least 2 camera angles (front and side).
        • Perform all the techniques in succession up through all the ranks first, then switch camera angles.
